Is your nutrition the missing link?
I’ve been working out hard for the better part of my adult life. I never thought much about my nutrition or the foods I eat because I counter balanced that with my workouts. The mentality, “I WORKOUT SO I CAN EAT WHATEVER I WANT” was kinda my thing. I ate “healthy” and mostly organic so I didn’t see the necessity of tracking macros, nor did I understand what that was all about.
BUT, last year I was missing something. I reached a plateau in my workouts and after 3 babies, I knew I was carrying around extra fat that was pretty stubborn to get rid of. I thought I was eating “healthy” until I started tracking and realized I was eating a hell of a lot of fat, very little protein, and my carbs were super high compared to my other macronutrients.
When I sat down and did the research a light bulb went off. IS this the missing piece to hitting some PR’s and loosing some body fat? There is so much research to back up macro tracking and it’s all based on science. I loved the idea that I did’t have to give up anything, I just had to fit it into my programmed nutrients and I could plan to eat the foods I love. That meant pizza and wine on Friday nights, dessert when I planned for it, and no more punishing myself by working out longer for eating “all the things” the night before. I started doing less cardio, focused on strength training to build muscle, and was consistent with hitting my macronutrients EVERY day.
I spent 6 weeks tracking in 2021 and was shocked with the results. I had more energy, I didn’t binge on chips and guacamole in the evenings when I felt hungry, I slept better, and I lost INCHES of fat on my waist, thighs, and butt. I gained a 1lb of muscle, and pounds of body fat. I felt great, I felt strong, I felt different. My mindset about food shifted and when I stopped tracking for a cut and started eating for maintenance, I made better, healthier choices for my fitness goals that I maintained! I’m on the tail end of another “cut” and I’ve enjoyed every step of it including hitting a new back squat PR and feeling stronger then ever. I have a good foundation of what to eat to nourish my body, and I’m not afraid to eat “carbs” like so many of us are.
I don’t believe in diets, but I do believe in macro tracking. Most women have a f’ed up relationship with food. We deprive ourselves of food because we don’t want to get “fat” and then we binge, workout, or worse, leave our bodies starving. All of these screw up our metabolism and it takes a LOT of work and ALOT of time to undo. If you are feeling like this is you, you are not alone. I was there too. You don’t have to punish yourself after you eat french fries or cake or that venti caramel frappuccino! If you want to loose fat, look “toned”, sleep better, and fix your metabolism, I highly recommend taking a look at macro tracking, strength training, and dialing in your nutrition. It will be a game changer!
